The Greene County boys basketball team ended the regular season with a non-conference game against the Winterset Huskies, the runner-up team in the Raccoon River Activities Conference.
The game had been postponed three times due to weather. It was worth the wait, as the game went down to the last two seconds. In the end, the Rams lost 58-57, with both teams scoring below their season averages.
The Rams were up 20-10 after one quarter, but the Huskies came back and the score was tied at 31 at halftime. The score was tied again at 44 at the end of the third quarter.
The score was tied at 54 with eight seconds left to play. The Huskies made a 3-point shot. What followed was a game of trading fouls as both teams tried to keep the other from making a 2- or 3-point shot. Ram junior Lance Hughes was fouled and made both free throws to bring the Rams within one point, 57-56. The Huskies went to the line for two shots and made one of them to make the score 58-56. Carter Morton went to the line next and made one of two foul shots for a 58-57 score. The Rams got possession after Morton’s foul shot because the foul against him was intentional. They were unable to inbound it successfully and when the final buzzer sounded, the Huskies were ahead 58-57.
Hughes was high scorer for the Rams with 17 points, including two 3-point baskets and five of six free throws. Wade Adcock, after missing the game against Grand View Christian, scored 13 points and led the team in rebounds with 10. Trey Hinote scored 11 points with three 3-pointers. He went to the charity line only once and missed the shot. Carter Morton scored nine points with two 3-pointers, Joe Towers scored five points and Jordan Patterson added two points.
The Rams shot at 37 percent from the floor, below their season average, and 67 percent from the free throw line.
The Rams ended the regular season with an 11-10 record.
They begin tournament play Tuesday at Woodward-Granger against the 6-15 Panorama Panthers in Class 2A District 15 play.
